Man gets 10 years in prison for driving wife to suicide

The woman had approached the Shalimar Bagh police station to lodge a complaint of physical torture with the duty officer.

Insisting that police take sterner action in cases of domestic violence in the city,a sessions court on Saturday pulled up a police officer for his negligence in investigating a case of domestic violence which ultimately ended in the suicide of a 19-year-old woman.

Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau sentenced the husband of the woman to 10 years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on charges of inflicting cruelty on his wife and abetting her suicide within 11 months of their marriage.

The husband,Vikas Mehta, had earlier been booked in 18 criminal cases on charges of dacoity and theft and was convicted in four of them.

The judge ruled that Mehta would serve his term in addition to the sentence already imposed in other cases.

“These instances of women choosing to end their lives soon after their marriage on account of harassment and torture are alarmingly on the rise and if we want the society to be ridden of this growing evil,it is imperative that whenever a drastic crime of this nature is detected and the offence brought home to the accused, the court should exercise zero tolerance for the same and deal with the offender ruthlessly and impose deterrent punishment,” Judge Lau said.

The woman had approached the Shalimar Bagh police station to lodge a complaint of physical torture with the duty officer.

The complaint was marked to head constable Ram Asrey, who did not take any action in the case and submitted a false report after the death of the woman.

The constable also gave a false testimony in the court stating that he did not take any action in the case since he was not aware of the address of the woman.

The court had directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police to take action against the constable for “ making a false report, dereliction of duty and deposing falsely in the court”.

“I am of a firm belief that a public servant who fails to perform his duty to the detriment of life and liberty of another has to be made accountable and there can be no escape,” ASJ Lau said.

“Hence,in this background,I direct that a copy of this order be placed before the Commissioner of Police,Delhi, with directions to intimate this court within a period of one month from the receipt of this order the action initiated by the department against Head Constable Ram Asrey,” she said.
