The body of a 45-year old man from Northeast Delhi’s Garhi Mendu village, who went missing in the Yamuna waters two days ago while trying to bring his cow to safety, was recovered on Friday. Police said Ombir had drowned.
Ombir, survived by his wife and three children, was reported missing on Wednesday. During the inquiry, police found that he was last seen around 8.30 am that day, moving from Pusta Road towards the village.
“Ombir and his family had managed to pack most of their stuff from their home. However, after dropping off his family and household items, he returned to get the cow. On the way, his foot slipped owing to a rising Yamuna and he was washed away. Some people saw him but since the flow was heavy, no one went near him,” his cousin Meginder said.
Police teams conducted search operations along with the District Disaster Management Authority, the National Disaster Response Force, and local residents. However, they failed to track Ombir. “Around 11 am on Friday, the body was recovered from near the village,” DCP (Northeast) Ashish Mishra said.
Meginder said Ombir worked as a security guard with a private firm.
In another incident, a man was injured and five parked cars were damaged after a wall collapsed in R block of Greater Kailash I. Manoj, a driver by profession, was taken to AIIMS, said police.
