A man’s wish to meet his ex-wife landed him in jail after he allegedly used fake identity to procure a visa to travel to the United States of America.

The police said Hardeep Singh’s wife went to the US a few months ago and later filed for divorce. She then got married to an American in a bid to attain citizenship.

The woman then divorced the American and called Singh to the US to live with her,the police said.

Since Singh had earlier applied for US visa, which was rejected,he decided to apply under a false name — Harjeet Singh. The fraud was detected by the US Embassy who called the Chanakyapuri police station. Singh was arrested on Tuesday.

“When his application was scrutinised, the authorities saw the error and the local police was informed,” a senior police officer said.

Singh has been booked for cheating under Section 420/468 of the IPC and was sent to police custody after being produced in court.

Investigating officers said Singh disclosed during interrogation that he was asked to use a fake name by one of the agents in Punjab, who was even paid by Singh. The agent is absconding, the police said.
