Investigations into the September 14 violence in Masuri have revealed that the first written complaint, about the desecration of the Quran, was destroyed by the complainant when he was asked to sign it.

The complainant,Matik Ur Rehman, then wrote another FIR and told muezzin of Rafiqabad mosque,Abdul Qadir,to sign it,police said.

Qadir on Tuesday disowned the complaint claiming Matik’s father,Jalil Ur Rehman, forced him to sign it.

Police said when the then SHO P K Singh, suspended after the mob attack, asked Matik to get a photocopy of the first complaint,he tore the paper up.

Qadir had earlier said he had refused to go with the men to the police station.

“I showed the torn pages of the Quran to the Imam who asked me to keep them safe. In the evening, some people said they wanted to take them to the police station. They asked the Imam to go with them, but he refused. I refused too,but when they wanted someone from the masjid to come. The Imam told me to go,” Qadir said.

Imam of the masjid Mujibur Rehman confirmed Qadir’s version. “In the evening, when people asked me to come to the police station, but I said no. They put their arm on Qadir’s shoulder and took him, despite his reluctance,” Rehman said.
