Tryst Music Café doesn’t seem to do justice to the food. And where’s the live music?
Even with bleak, watery coffee and no live music, the newly opened Tryst still calls itself a Music Café. We wonder why. Hidden by half-constructed desolate malls behind Select City Walk,Saket,Tryst Music Café is on the ground floor of Ras Villas Mall. And judging by the inquiries made by several first-time customers, not many people seem aware of this month-old restaurant that serves Mediterranean and Oriental cuisine. Tryst, however, makes a promising first impression with a wide projection screen, live band performance area and a lounge-like seating arrangement that can cover almost 50.
But the weak coffee (R125) and preservative-sweet fresh lime soda (R85) do not make for a good start for our meal. We are surprised how far-off their concoctions are from half-way decent, despite these being the most commonly consumed drinks. Upon the recommendation of our server,we order the house special Cognac Garlic Prawns (R495) but are not very hopeful. The chef, however, has other plans the six pieces of prawns may not be elephantine in size as the menu promised, but are surprisingly well cooked and spiced. The butter, garlic, chilli flakes and lime combine well with the acidity of the white wine, and leave a tangy aftertaste.
The joy of our tastebuds is short-lived we are not so lucky with the main course. We order the grilled fillet of sole (R425) and smoked chicken tortellini in white sauce (R395). The fish does not melt in our mouths,as well-cooked sole should, but is adequately infused with lemon and butter to complement the polenta it comes along with.
The tortellini seems like it has been hastily made, and with little effort. The cream is said to be made from Fontina cheese, which originally has a woody taste that compliments roasted and smoked meats. This pasta sauce, however, seems to be too heavily processed and difficult to savour. Furthermore, the stuffing is too sparse and the chicken barely makes its presence felt. We are all too conscious of the futility of consuming so many calories eating the gooey cheese mess in maida.
To make matters worse, our cheesecake with wild berry compote (R345) leaves us hanging mid-air. For its hefty price,we were not expecting a small slice of badly baked sponge cake with a thin sliver of cheese and rubbery compote.
