London-based forensic expert finds holes in CBI evidence

Aarushi’s parents Rajesh and Nupur Talwar are standing trial for the murder of their 14-year-old daughter domestic help Hemraj.

A London-based forensic expert pointed out irregularities in the DNA evidence submitted by the CBI in the Aarushi-Hemraj double murder case at a CBI Ghaziabad court on Monday.

Aarushi’s parents Rajesh and Nupur Talwar are standing trial for the murder of their 14-year-old daughter domestic help Hemraj. The murders took place in May 2008.

Andre Semikhodski,a defence witness, told the court that though he had not received the raw data in the case,he disagreed with the findings of the prosecution. According to Semikhodski, the DNA report submitted in the case could lead to a “miscarriage of justice”.

Pointing out the lacunae in the report,Semikhodski said that it had not calculated the “random match probability” (RMP),which would allow the court to form an opinion on the strength of the DNA evidence.

Questioning the competence of Dr B K Mahapatra, who had compiled the report,Semikhodski said,“In none of his reports Dr Mahapatra has mentioned analysis or results of DNA profiling of reference samples taken from victims and other suspects. This makes it impossible to put his findings within the frame of current criminal case.”

Semikhodski also said an unconventional method had been adopted for the DNA analysis in the case. His testimony shall continue in the court on Tuesday.
