The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday thanked the Supreme Court for safeguarding democracy by granting interim bail until June 1 to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and said that the decision had come as a “ray of hope”.

“Lok Sabha elections of 2024 actually start now,” AAP leader Jasmine Shah said an hour after the Supreme Court gave respite to Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with the alleged excise policy scam.

“Today, the Supreme Court has shone a ray of hope for those who love the county, the Constitution and democracy by giving bail to Arvind Kejriwal. Not just Delhi, the whole country is happy today. We thank the Supreme Court for this decision. This is a victory of truth. Kejriwal was arrested without any proof. We have started a movement to end tanashahi (dictatorship), and this movement will be strengthened with Kejriwal walking out of jail,” said AAP Delhi convenor Gopal Rai.

Appealing to the people of the country to use their vote responsibly, senior AAP leader Atishi said, “Democracy is the bedrock of this country. The government in power at present is trying to end democracy and compromise the Constitution. I appeal to the people of the country to vote responsibly and bring an end to the tanashah government.”

“The SC decision today does not just give relief to Arvind Kejriwal. Democracy has won, the Constitution has won. Whenever democracy and the Constitution have been threatened, Supreme Court has come forward to protect it. This decision will safeguard democracy,” Atishi added.

“In a PMLA case, in which the Centre‘s machinery wanted to keep a chief minister in jail, in a case where people have been kept in jail for months without proof, Arvind Kejriwal getting interim bail in 40 days is nothing short of a miracle. This is a sign from God that India needs a change,” said senior AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj.

Like Kejriwal, the ED has also arrested his deputy Manish Sisodia in a case linked to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy.
