Scores of people gathered at the Delhi Jal Boards Lajpat Nagar office on Friday to protest against the killing of 11 dogs inside the premises last Sunday.
The protesters alleged that several strays were butchered at the DJB office last Sunday (May 2) in connivance with the DJB security personnel. Remains of dogs were found on the campus.
The Animal Welfare Board of India has put in a complaint with senior officials of the DJB,while an FIR has also been lodged at the Lajpat Nagar police station.
That the animals were killed in this manner at the DJB office should be condemned. The office is not a slaughterhouse and the act is cruel and inhumane. We met senior DJB officials today and have asked them to cooperate in the investigations, animal rights activist Ambika Shukla said.
Senior DJB officials, however, claimed a few pigs from a nearby slum colony had entered the DJB complex and were chased by dogs. When the pig owners came by to take back their animals, they hit the dogs, a senior DJB official said.
The official maintained that no DJB employee was involved in the killing of the dogs. The police will investigate the matter further, the official added.
