Khap mahapanchayat: Police tighten security as farmers, labour unions join wrestlers’ protest at Jantar Mantar
Top wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia have been protesting at Jantar Mantar for almost two weeks. On Sunday, several farmers’ union members left for Delhi from Haryana to join the protest.

Ahead of the khap mahapanchayat at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Sunday, the Delhi Police has increased deployment and strengthened surveillance teams and checking points for the protest. Hundreds of farmers and members of labour unions are expected to join the wrestlers’ ongoing protest against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The police said security has been beefed up near the Singhu border and all vehicles are being stopped and checked. More than 200 personnel from CRPF, Rapid Action Force and other paramilitary forces have also been deployed. One side of the protest area has been sealed with three to five layers of barricades. The police said the other side has been “extended” to give space to protesters.
An officer said, “We have put more cameras and CCTVs on the ground. The officers will also be armed with cameras. All the footage is being checked by senior officers, including the DCP. We have also made adequate traffic arrangements to help commuters and other protesters who are coming from Punjab and Haryana.”
The late-night ruckus at the protest site on Wednesday led the police to heighten security in the area and around borders. At least two wrestlers and five police personnel were injured during the scuffle that broke out between the protesters and the police over cots. Several political leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress, who came to support the wrestlers, were forcibly removed and detained by the police.
