After 4-year wait, JNU student union polls to be held on March 22

After a gap of four years, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi will hold its students’ union elections on March 22 and the results will be declared on March 24. Elections to the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) were last held in 2019.
According to the schedule released by JNU’s election committee, which is responsible for overseeing the polls, the tentative voters’ list will be displayed on Monday and it will be open for correction till Tuesday. Corrections to the voters’ list can be made on March 12 from 9 am to 5 pm.
On March 15, Thursday, nomination forms will be issued from 2 pm to 5 pm. The window to file nominations will open at 9.30 am on March 16, Friday, and close by 5 pm that day. The list of valid nominations will be displayed at 9 am on Saturday, March 17, according to the report. Candidates can withdraw their nominations between 10 am and 1 pm on the same day following which the final list of candidates will be displayed at 3 pm.
A University Governing Body Meeting (UGBM) will be held on March 20, followed by a presidential debate during which the candidates will address other students.
Voting will be held on March 22 while the counting of votes will take place on March 24, following which the results will be declared, according to the notice.
This year, the JNU general body passed a resolution to extend the prescribed age limit of candidates contesting the students’ union elections by two years, according to an official document.
The document outlining the resolutions stated, “Lyngdoh Committee Recommendations, which provides the regulatory framework for the conduct of the JNUSU election in conjunction with the JNUSU Constitution and Hon’ble Supreme Court Guidelines, prescribe age bars for the candidates contesting the JNUSU elections… The University General Body (UGBM) mandates that the JNUSU put forth the demand for age relaxation of 2 years to ensure that students deprived of their right to contest the JNUSU elections could get an opportunity to contest the JNUSU elections 2023-24.”
