Southern Virginia shooting: Three deputies injured during standoff, suspect in custody
A state police spokesperson said agents would likely remain at the scene overnight to collect evidence.

Three sheriff’s deputies in Pittsylvania County, in US’ southern Virginia, were injured by shrapnel while executing warrants, officials said on Thursday. Pittsylvania County Sheriff Michael W. Taylor told reporters the deputies were serving warrants for brandishing a firearm and trespassing, as well as a protective order, when gunfire erupted.
An hourslong standoff followed but ended peacefully, with the suspected shooter surrendering, he said.
“All three are well. Of course they’re shaken up. And they’re going through the process now of trying to heal,” Taylor said as per AP, adding that none of the deputies was directly hit by bullets.
The sheriff has asked the Virginia State Police to investigate.

Sgt Rick Garletts, a state police spokesperson, said agents would likely remain at the scene overnight to collect evidence. “We’re very happy that there were no further injuries tonight. This could have ended much worse than it did,” Garletts said. “I’m glad he gave himself up and came on out.”
Photos and video from the scene showed a large number of police and emergency vehicles parked in the area.

Earlier in the day, US Rep John McGuire, who represents Virginia’s 5th congressional district, wrote on X that his “thoughts and prayers are with the deputies who were shot in Pittsylvania County, as well as their families.”
Pittsylvania County sits along Virginia’s southern border with North Carolina, about 158 kilometres northwest of Raleigh. It is one of the largest counties in the state by land area.
