Jamia postpones dentistry exam after talk of a leak

This year, the BTech department received 39,654 applications, while BDS invited 6,603.

Jamia Millia Islamia on Sunday postponed the entrance examination for its Bachelors in Dental Surgery course after rumours of a paper leak spread through the university. Jamia’s BTech entrance exam, for which the university receives the maximum number of applications, was also marred by rumours of a leak just before the test began on Saturday. However, no investigation has been ordered by the university as of now.

This is the first time that the university has outsourced its entrance exam procedures to a private company. Jamia signed a contract with Computer Maintenance Corporation (CMC), a subsidiary of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), to handle the online admission forms and other related work.

This, according to Jamia sources, is in violation of all the general financial rules of the Government of India, as “tenders were not floated for outsourcing of such services”. The university’s own IT centre, known as FTK Centre for Information Technology, has been catering to its IT needs until now. In addition, the university has not uploaded the contract signed with CMC on its website.

This year, the BTech department received 39,654 applications, while BDS invited 6,603.

Professors in the dentistry department said until now, the departments concerned had conducted their own entrance exams. But this year, the controller of exams was given this responsibility, “which has been working in tandem with CMC”.

A Jamia spokesperson said that CMC was involved to “strengthen and professionalise the entrance exam system”. While Jamia sets and evaluates the papers, CMC is to administer the publishing of these papers and in the allotment and coordination of examination centres.
