Irate guard shoots at man for smoking in CNG station

A security guard of a CNG station allegedly shot at a 23-year-old man early on Friday after an altercation over smoking.

A security guard of a CNG station allegedly shot at a 23-year-old man early on Friday after an altercation over smoking.

The smoker,one Rahat Sharma,a manager with a private firm,had pulled in to the station for a refill. Police sources said Sharma was smoking at that time.

The guard,50-year-old Navratan — a retired BSF man — asked Sharma to stop smoking inside the station,said the officer,investigating the incident.

The officer said even after Sharma had thrown away the cigarette,Navratan continued to accuse him of being irresponsible. At this,Sharma,who was accompanied by three friends,got into an argument with the guard.

Navratan,who had a 12-bore rifle on him,shot at Sharma in a fit of rage. “Fortunately,the bullet just brushed Sharma’s shoulder. He was taken to Moolchand Hospital,where he is being treated and is said to be out of danger,” police sources said.

The incident took place in the Lodhi Colony area of South Delhi,around 12.30 am on Friday.

After the shooting,Sharma’s friends called the police control room and Navratan was arrested from the spot.

The investigating officer said Navratan retired from the BSF about 21 years ago and had been working at the CNG station for the last four months. He lived in Sangam Vihar,while his family is in Rohtak,Haryana.

“We have informed Navratan’s family about the incident and have called them to Delhi,” police source said.

Rahat Sharma lives in East of Kailash. A case has been registered at the Lodhi Colony police station.

Navratan was produced before a city court on Friday and further investigations are on in the matter.
