The story of India and the amalgamation of its diverse sub-cultures and traditions is what India Alive: The Musical, the latest production of Akshara Theatre,is all about. Directed by Anasuya Vaidya,it opens with conquests, struggles and mutinies faced by India as a nation, including invasions by the British forces and goes on to discuss religion, music,Bollywood and notions of love and sex.

“We try to ask that, where does love, including sex, come into all of this? The topic of sex is always kept under wraps in India. Through this,we explore how traditions play an important part in our country and why, after all these years, they still continue,” said Jalabala Vaidya, artistic director and co-Founder of Akshara Theatre.

The show begins with the story of the Vedas and the origin of the word Om,and then leads into the Bhagavad Gita and its priniciples. Including the story and struggles of India, the musical takes the audience into an exploration of how love fits into the history of the country. Even after all the battles, traditions remain.

Binding all the parts of the show is the core of it all: the music. Composed by Jalabala’s husband,Gopal Sharman, the performance also includes a colourful Bollywood segment. “Since it is a musical, you will see a lot of song and dance including a slew of dancers, who are dressed in different animal costumes,” said Jalabala.

“The audience of today is depressed about corruption and violence, but I want people to walk away feeling elated,” said Jalabala.
