In Noida,Rs 200-crore ‘park’ project goes on but top babus have ‘no idea’ what it will hold

Surrounded by a thick green net blanket,by the side of the road in Sector 15,is a construction that might come across as routine administrative work for many residents. But look inside, and there seems to be a bizarre story under construction, for none of the top officials admittedly have any idea what is being constructed behind the wall: nine kilometers long and 12 feet in height.

On record,Noida Authority officials claim the wall is part of a project for park beautification — it is barely 500 meteres from the bird sanctuary in the area. But it becomes more intriguing when senior officials said the Authority has marked Rs 200 crore for the project inside the boundary wall, which in itself has reportedly been allocated a budget of Rs 82 crore.

A K Goel, senior project engineer (maintenance),Noida, said,“I just know there is a pathway under construction on the land. The Uttar Pradesh public works department is looking after the rest of the construction.”

District Magistrate Shravan Kumar said,“The budget is allocated by the Noida Authority,so they should know what construction is taking place.”

Authority CEO Mohinder Singh did not respond to repeated calls and text messages on his cellphone to elaborate on the Rs 200-crore project.

Meanwhile,a 10-foot-long concrete platform has been constructed in the middle of the land, and a huge stone pathway is under construction leading to the platform. Beyond the platform lies another huge chunk of land, left for more construction that none of the top officials in the district seem to have any inkling about.

Workers at the construction site said the platform is almost complete. “We just have to raise a meter-tall platform and then lay a substructure,” said a labourer (name withheld to protect identity) at the site. “We have heard from the contractor that there will be a massive stone statue of an elephant. The contractor also said there might be some construction to commemorate the late Kanshi Ram.”
