In a move to tackle “urban apathy” towards elections, polling stations will be set up in multi-storey housing societies in Gurgaon, Faridabad and Sonipat as the state goes to polls in October, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar said Friday.
Addressing a press conference to announce the dates for assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, Kumar said, “We are doing it (setting up polling booths) in slums and multi-storey housing societies. In Haryana, in particular Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Sonipat, many polling booths will be shifted to multi-storey societies and slums so there is little congestion and an increased voting percentage. This is one way of handling urban apathy in the elections.”
Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav told The Indian Express that the district administration has received approval to set up 115 polling booths in residential societies in four assembly segments — Badshahpur, Gurgaon, Sohna and Pataudi. “The highest number of stations will be in Badshahpur and Gurgaon constituencies. In Lok Sabha polls, we had 52 polling booths in Gurgaon, which helped improve polling and took it to 62% — the highest polling percentage in NCR. We hope this move will further improve the turnout,” he said.
Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the state election commission had set up 52 polling booths in 31 high-rise societies in Gurgaon to increase the voting percentage.
According to the Haryana CEO, all the 90 assembly segments of the state recorded over 60% voter turnout in the recently held elections. In the Gurgaon Lok Sabha seat, 15,96,240 voters exercised their voting rights; the number of voters in Gurgaon was the highest in the state at 25,73,411.
Haryana has a total of 90 assembly constituencies of which 73 are general and 17 are reserved for the Scheduled Caste category. The state has 2.01 crore voters of which 1.06 crore are males, 0.95 female and 459 third gender voters.
There are 20,629 polling stations at 10,495 locations.
Polling booths will be set up in Faridabad housing societies as well.
“This time, 181 new booths have been made. As many as 57 booths have been set up in high rise societies,” said a Faridabad district administration official.
