The son of an Intelligence Bureau operator and his friend have been arrested for allegedly mugging elderly women out on morning walks.

The police said Sangat and his friend Balwinder were “inspired” by Hollywood film “Underground”.

The accused used the cash and jewellery to fund dates with their girlfriends,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast),Shalini Singh said.

The police said Balwinder and Sangat have been targeting elderly women out on morning walks in C R Park and Kalkaji for the past four months.

“We had received two complaints from RWAs in Kalkaji and C R Park, after which,we formed decoy teams to arrest them,” DCP Singh said.

They were active mostly on Sundays, with one being the thief and the other acting as a concerned citizen, the police said. One of them would pin down their target on a lonely stretch while the other would intervene, showing concern and trying to help the victim. While helping the woman, the second boy would pocket the jewellery using a cable-cutter,the police said.

Police officers said the boys never carried a weapon with them and used their motorcycles for committing the crime. Both vehicles have been recovered from them.
