While announcing details on the implementation of the Delhi government’s odd-even scheme, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Thursday said that he and his cabinet ministers will be carpooling as some of them live close to his residence in Civil Lines.
However, the chief minister said that even though the government was “taking a number of steps… public transport will not drastically improve all of a sudden”.
“If everyone who leaves their car behind takes public transport, I don’t think public transport will be able to bear the increased burden. That is why, I feel, carpooling is the most practical solution. An arrangement with a few friends can be easily worked out. Some people have tried it out and they didn’t really face any difficulty,” said Kejriwal.
He, however, cautioned that people should avoid carpooling with strangers.
Kejriwal said that those in-charge of parking lots will be told not to allow parking of cars with odd number plates on even dates and vice-versa.
The chief minister said that while bus lanes were being marked on many roads, cars will be allowed to run on bus lanes. Parking on or obstructing a bus lane will lead to a ‘heavy fine,’ he said.
