Holding out sops, CM Kejriwal labours to win over working class

At launch of Shramik Vikas Mission said, will focus on taking strict action against employers for non-payment of minimum wages.

Easy access to government hospitals, new dispensaries and schools for the poor — these were some of the promises Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made to the working class on Labour Day.

Speaking at the launch of his government’s Shramik Vikas Mission, Kejriwal said the mission was to ensure basic facilities to the poor and the labour class.

The programme, the CM said, will focus on taking strict action against employers for non-payment of minimum wages along with enhancement of financial entitlements under various welfare schemes for construction workers.

“There will be pension benefits for the unorganised workers under the scheme. The government will amend the existing Minimum Wages Act by adding stringent punishment to employers for non-payment of minimum wages to workers. We will table the amendment in the Assembly session in June,” Kejriwal said.

Speaking on the occasion, Labour Minister Gopal Rai said a dedicated Shramik Helpline — 12789 — has been strengthened with the addition of five more numbers. “The helpline is managed by experienced and well-trained officials of the Labour Department who are fully equipped with all necessary information to address all queries,” the minister said.

Kejriwal on Friday also said that no slums near railway lines will be demolished. The CM said he has taken up matter with the Railways and the Delhi Development Authority. He also announced that the government will give pucca houses to all slum dwellers in five years.

The Chief Minister also said the government will provide uninterrupted power and water to all Delhi residents this summer. Where water supply is not available, tankers will be provided, Kejriwal said.
