Heavy scorer throws his weight

At a time when portly players are history, weighing a total of 95 kg,Mukul Dagar seems to belong to a different era. Twenty-year-old Dagar was one of the stand out performers of the recently concluded Delhi’s hot weather season.

In his first year playing for the Collage Group — despite not playing all matches — Dagar scored over 1000 runs in the five tournaments that he played.

He got runs in all — DDCA league,Lala Raghubir Rai,GG Dutt and DDCA’s hot weather including an 80-ball 153 in the finals of the Lala Raghubir Rai tournament.

It was a knock that ironically was underplayed because of Yuvraj Singh’s slimmed down appearance in that match. When Dagar succeeded, invariably his team won with overs to spare. His early dismissal in the semi-final of the hot weather saw Collage crash out.

Dagar’s size has made him the target of much ribbing, friendly in the Collage dressing area and not quite so when he fields on the boundary line. While Dagar generally ignore the jibes directed at him,the young left-hander reveals that at times the ribbing gets to him. “I am not a slow fielder nor a lazy runner, but there is so much pressure because every one expects cricketers to look perfect.”

The former India U-19 player adds jokingly “ Of course thanks to the heat this year,I’m losing more weight than I normally would have just by doing fitness work.”

And while Dagar lets his batting do the talking,he isn’t a one trick pony. In the hot weather match against ONGC,he pulled off a match winning, running sideways sliding catch on the boundary line that silenced the titters coming from across the boundary ropes.

Dagar also has college on his mind having applied to Khalsa college in the English Honours programme under the sports quota- mainly because of Khalsa’s strong cricket team.” Dagar says he hopes the fitted shirts he plans to wear to college will suite his frame better than the pyjama’s he currently wears on the field.
