HALF MEASURES

Even before the models walked the runway in Satya Paul’s first outing at the fourth edition of the Delhi Couture Week, some of us,who have been closely watching fashion child Masaba Gupta, were already familiar with a few motifs. Thanks to Gupta’s Instagram obsession. For it was here that she introduced the term “demi-couture”,which literally translates to half couture, and also posted photos of floral prints. Did she also hint at Sonam Kapoor’s showstopper appearance? Yes.

The fringe show on Friday had about 25 pieces on the runway, along with two heartbreakers — Anil Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor. If only the clothes matched up.

Gupta, the brand’s fashion director, gave the clothes a bit of femininity and hints of androgyny. So there were tailcoat jackets with shararas made of lace, saris over jumpsuits and gowns with lapels. The prints were signature Satya Paul and floral motifs walked the ramp to Lana Del Rey’s Born to die. The fabrics were breatheable,so there were organzas, georgettes and chiffons with lace cut-outs,embellishments and patch-work. Black, white and a dash of some brighter hues comprised the range.

While Gupta attempted to balance couture with prêt,she failed to stir up the emotions one associates with couture. In words, she explained “demi-couture” well, but the clothes didn’t speak the same

language.
