Gurgaon Metro to cut 40K tonnes of carbon emissions

1.5 lakh passengers will travel on Metro system every day, taking 70,000 vehicles off the roads.

The upcoming internal Metro link in Gurgaon, connecting Sikanderpur to NH-8,is touted to cut down on 40,000 tonnes of carbon emissions once it starts operations. Officials of the Rapid Metro Gurgaon Rail Limited (RMGL) claimed that with an expected ridership of 1.5 lakh passengers per day,the Metro system is expected not only to ease road congestion but also improve air quality in the city.

The project is registered with the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) and the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) for prior consideration in getting carbon credits and is estimated to reduce approximately 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission per year,an official statement stated.

Sarvesh Tiwari,RMGL spokesperson, said,“The company is determined to adopt environmental-friendly construction practices, striking a balance between preventing ecological degradation and minimising inconvenience to the public. The environmental practices adopted by the company will highlight the organisation’s commitment to promote environmental conservation and its efforts to create environmental awareness among RMGL employees, contractors and Metro users.”

The public transport system, likely to become operational by early 2013,is expected to remove over a daily load of 70,000 vehicles from the city’s roads, according to internal estimates. “It is estimated that 1.5 lakh passengers will travel on the Metro network per day. If the same number of people travel by car,it will take at least 70,000 cars to carry them. With the number of cars on the road going down, the average speed of the traffic will increase,” said an official.

Officials said that by removing only smaller trees during the construction, the project will keep in check the extent of ecological degradation. “Because an extensive amount of green cover is affected during the site-clearing operation,a manual count of the existing trees on every median has been carried out to identify the number of trees that are likely to be affected and/or cut during the construction phase. For every tree cut during construction, the company is planting more than eight trees as compensatory afforestation,” the official added.
