Gurgaon civic body identifies 17,373 illegal water connections, starts sending notices

In June, the GMDA had directed the MCG to disconnect all illegal water connections in Gurgaon.

GurgaonThe MCG has emphasised that the notice distribution process is transparent.

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has begun sending notices in respect to 17,373 illegal water connections across the city, directing affected households to pay outstanding dues and obtain legal metered water connections within 15 days.

“Failure to comply will result in disconnection and hefty penalties. Penalties will be calculated from the date the respective property ID was issued, aiming to hold accountable those who have been illegally using water for years,” an MCG spokesperson said.

Further, authorised meter readers are distributing notices and obtaining written acknowledgments to ensure a transparent and authentic process.

The MCG has emphasised that the notice distribution process is transparent.

“Consumers are urged not to make payments to anyone demanding money in the name of notices and to report such incidents to the corporation immediately,” the spokesperson added.

The application process for legal water connections is available online at the MCG’s official website, http://www.mcg.gov.in.

Obtaining a valid water connection is mandatory for all residential and commercial properties in the MCG area, the spokesperson further said.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Yash Jaluka stated, “The initiative aims to ensure transparent and sustainable water management in the city. Consumers who fail to regularise their connections within the stipulated time will face strict action. This is intended to ensure equitable water distribution and fairness to consumers who have been paying for legal connections.”

In June, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) had directed the MCG to disconnect illegal and direct connections made on GMDA and MCG master water supply pipelines.

That move means there will be no direct water supply to households without it being rerouted through the designated MCG boosting stations that regulate pressure and flow. Certain housing societies had been installing water pipelines routed from the MCG and GMDA’s master water supply lines.

Shyamal Misra, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), GMDA, had instructed the MCG to ensure that all boosting stations under its jurisdiction are commissioned and operational.

To enhance efficiency, he had mandated joint inspections by GMDA and MCG officials to assess the performance of boosting stations and underground tanks (UGTs). The step aims to curb unregulated water usage and ensure a controlled supply of potable water across the city.

MCG officials had noted that direct water connections were currently found at the Amanpura area, where the main line is meant to be a feeder for the Dayanand Colony boosting station, impacting water pressure for the whole network. Similar direct lines exist in F and H blocks at Palam Vihar and Sectors 12B, 21, 22, and 23, officials had said at the time.
