Entrepreneur Ashneer Grover (File Photo)Entrepreneur Ashneer Grover’s brother-in-law and the former head of procurement at BharatPe has been arrested by Economic Offences Wing (EOW) for his alleged involvement in facilitating misappropriation of company funds, the Delhi police said.
Arrested Thursday, accused Deepak Gupta was produced before a court Friday and sent to police custody for five days.
He was named in a May 2023 FIR registered against Grover, his wife Madhuri Jain and other family members for misappropriation of BharatPe funds. “Deepak Gupta was the procurement head at BharatPe when the alleged misappropriation of funds happened. He used to acknowledge the bogus deliveries made by the non-existence vendors, on the basis of which payments were cleared by BharatPe in their name,” a police official said.
This is the second arrest in the case. In August, the EOW had arrested Amit Kumar Bansal for being a part of non-existing vendor and HR consultancy firms that received Rs 72 crore from BharatPe.
“His (Gupta’s) involvement was corroborated during the interrogation of Amit Bansal who is now in judicial custody,” DCP (EOW) Raja Banthia said.
The case came to light after BharatPe accused Grover and his family of duping the company to the tune of Rs 81.3 crore using forged invoices to make illegitimate inflated payments to bogus vendors, travel agencies, fake HR consultants and sham payments to GST authorities.
