A 42-year-old undertrial prisoner arrested on murder charges died by suicide in the district jail at Luksar in Greater Noida on July 18, officials said, adding that three policemen were suspended over the incident.

Benarsi, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Balrampur district, had been in jail since September 13, 2023, after his arrest by the Jewar police for allegedly murdering his friend.

“No family member had come to meet him for the last 10 months and no one was trying to get him bail. He was very upset about this and was under stress. That day he had asked for permission to go out and take a bath and the three policemen had allowed him to go. Taking advantage of this opportunity, he died by suicide. He was taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” said an official.

The officials identified the suspended trio as warden Satyaprakash and constables Horilal and Prashant Chaudhary, who were deployed for the security of Benarsi’s barrack. They were found negligent in an investigation conducted after the suicide, according to the officials.
