6-year-old girl drowns on waterlogged road in Rohini

A team from the local police station immediately reached the spot and began searching the nearby area, said officers. “The girl’s father had returned home from a shoe factory in Mundka where he worked when he noticed that one of his daughters was missing,” said a senior police officer.

“When he asked around, he was told that she was playing outside at first and then had gone to her aunt’s house nearby…the aunt’s house must have been 30 feet away from their house…However, when the father went there to check, she wasn’t there either,” said the officer.

During the search, officers found the girl floating in accumulated rainwater near her house. Police suggested that she must have drowned on the way to or back from her aunt’s house.

“The child was pulled out and rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri, where doctors declared her brought dead,” said DCP Rohini Rajeev Ranjan.

“Preliminary findings suggest that the child may have slipped into the water and drowned,” the DCP added. Police added that waterlogging is a persistent problem in the area.

Following the incident, the girl’s parents initially expressed reluctance to allow a post-mortem examination but later consented, said officers. The body has been preserved in the hospital mortuary, and legal formalities are being completed.

The police have begun proceedings to confirm the exact circumstances of the drowning. “Further investigation is underway,” the officer said.
