He also took on the AAP over the non-implementation of Central government schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, seeking to underline the BJP-led Centre's contribution to the development of the Capital. (Representational Image) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday set a fresh goal for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections as he told them to ensure that the party gets 50% more votes in every polling booth compared to the 2020 polls. He modified his target — declared during last year’s Lok Sabha polls — of getting 370 more votes for the party at each polling booth across the country to mark the end of Article 370 in 2019, which the BJP counts as a key achievement during its tenure. The PM’s remarks come as the BJP aims to end close to a three-decade-long power drought in the Capital.
“…. Twenty-five years (out of power) is a long time…get so many votes that this gap is filled this time…Delhi is identified by the central government…it needs a double-engine sarkar,” said the Prime Minister while addressing the workers via videoconferencing.
Criticising the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on multiple counts, including corruption and failing to provide basic facilities to the people of Delhi, the PM said, “BJP’s booth workers have a big responsibility to expose them (the AAP)…You should take pictures and make videos of every street of your booth where dirty water is flowing, drains are broken, there are heaps of garbage and share those pictures with people along with the location.”
For the first time in the run-up to Delhi polls, Modi underscored the BJP’s commitment to national issues such as ‘Nation first’, the Ram Mandir construction, the scrapping of Article 370 and the Uniform Civil Code. Predicting a “landslide win’ for his party, he said, “BJP kept Ram Mandir, Article 370, UCC at the core of its ideology and worked on them with complete honesty. There is only one focal point of our ideology – ‘Nation First’. I firmly believe that the strength of this organisation in Delhi, with three to four generations of workers at each booth, is the very power that will ensure a landslide victory for the BJP in the Assembly elections this time.”
Yet again calling AAP “aapda” (disaster), a term he has been using since he sounded the poll bugle for the Delhi elections, Modi said, “…Sheesh Mahal is a living example of the lies that the poor people of Delhi were told… There is a lot of anger in Delhi regarding the scams…The people of Delhi are now fed up with the AAP’s aapda (disaster) and their lies and deceit…” he said.
The PM and other BJP leaders have been referring to former CM Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence as “Sheesh Mahal”, alleging extravagant spending for the renovation of the bungalow.
Even as he said that the AAP was “so scared” that it was being forced to make a new poll-related announcement every day, the PM told the party workers, “No matter how cold it is, we have to increase the intensity of voting from the morning itself. We have to remember that the biggest goal is to form a BJP government,” he said.
Accusing AAP of spreading hatred for those hailing from Poorvanchal, the PM said, “We must not forget that these aapada people conspired against lakhs of our brothers and sisters from UP, Bihar, Rajasthan living in Delhi for years…The people of Delhi cannot forget how the people of Poorvanchal were driven away from the city.”
He also took on the AAP over the non-implementation of Central government schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, seeking to underline the BJP-led Centre’s contribution to the development of the Capital. Most of the top 10 big hospitals in Delhi are under the Central government, he said, adding that Centre also spends its budget on colleges and universities and the salaries of a large number of government employees in Delhi.
While AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday launched a ‘middle class manifesto’, the Prime Minister sought to underline the importance of the middle class people in the eyes of the BJP as far as the national economy was concerned.
“BJP considers the middle class to be the backbone of the country’s economy…the disaster created by these AAP people has given only troubles and problems to the middle class in Delhi…Today, the Government of India spends a lot of budget for the ease of living and ease of travel of the Delhi middle class,” he asserted. The Delhi Metro, the PM said, has reached every nook and corner of Delhi apart from a network of national highways and expressways built by the Centre.
Schemes focusing on women were among the highlights of his remarks on Wednesday as he said that the AAP did not ensure the benefits of such schemes reached women in Delhi and Punjab. “…This is the first-of-its kind aapda model… announcements are made in thin air. The BJP’s model is one of trust… The BJP’s model governments in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra are giving benefits under the Ladli Behna and Ladki Behna scheme…” he stressed.
The Prime Minister promised the immediate tabling of CAG reports on the AAP government’s functioning once the BJP is elected to power in Delhi. He further said that the BJP will start a mega campaign to ensure that potable water reaches every home after getting elected.
Targeting both the AAP and the Congress, the PM expressed confidence in the youth of the capital throwing its weight behind the BJP in these elections. “…BJP will truly improve the condition of government schools in Delhi and will make arrangements for free education from KG to PG for the needy,” he underlined.
