Days after Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during a Jan Sunwai event at her Civil Lines camp office, police on Sunday made the second arrest in the case — another man from Rajkot who was the attacker’s friend, said officers.

Tehsin (35) was allegedly aware that Rajesh Khimji Sakriya, the main accused, was planning to attack the CM, said an officer privy to the probe details. He had even transferred money to Sakriya when the latter was in Delhi.

An official privy to the investigation said, “They both knew each other since childhood days and before leaving Rajkot as well, Sakriya had told him that he will do ‘something big’ in Delhi. Tehsin had told him he would give him all kinds of support and also transferred Rs 2,000 online to him.” Both the accused were also confronted with each other.

The Indian Express reported on Friday that Tehsin was questioned after a team of Delhi Police reached Rajkot on Thursday. A team of Delhi Police had earlier served him a notice.

Sources said Sakriya’s initial plan was to allegedly sneak in a knife at the Jan Suwai event. However, after he saw the elaborate security arrangements outside the CM’s residence, he threw the knife.

“After he arrived in Delhi at the New Delhi Railway station, Sakriya headed to Hanuman temple in Karol Bagh. While leaving the station, he picked up a small knife from a fruit vendor. We are trying to recover the knife and teams are looking for it on the route leading from the Gujarati samaj guest house to the CM office,” the officer said.

The duo are expected to be produced before a court on Monday and sent to judicial custody. Several other persons — with whom Sakriya got in touch with before leaving Rajkot — have been questioned.

Meanwhile, days after the CRPF took over the security of Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, the Delhi Police has again been asked to take the security charge of Gupta and they have now increased the security personnel.

The CRPF security personnel are deployed outside CM’s house. Sources said CRPF personnel had reported on Thursday and Friday following a change of guard. Saturday onwards, the Delhi Police security unit was deployed again.
