Fresh protests,tension prevails

Tempers flared once again in the Nizamuddin area around 4.30 pm on Thursday when people took to the streets and resorted to stonepelting following the demolition of an “illegal” masjid early on Wednesday morning.

Tempers flared once again in the Nizamuddin area around 4.30 pm on Thursday when people took to the streets and resorted to stonepelting following the demolition of an “illegal” masjid early on Wednesday morning. The protests began after the police refused permission to hold 1 pm and 4 pm prayers on the masjid premises, despite local MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah promising the same.

A DTC bus was damaged, and another tourist bus was chased away by the stonepelters. The commuters near Neela Gumbad were also attacked, forcing the police to shut down both the carriageways between the circle and Ashram Chowk. The situation was brought under control after Marwah and area MP Sandeep Dikshit allowed the evening prayers,at 5.30 pm,on Mathura Road outside the Hazrat Nizamuddin police station.

“We diverted traffic from Neela Gumbad and Ashram Chowk due to the protest in the afternoon,” a senior police officer said.

The community elders later announced that the Friday namaz will be held at 1.30 pm at the site of the demolished structure.

“Sheila Dikshit had said on Wednesday that we could offer prayers at the mosque today, but the police prevented us from doing it so. That’s the reason the crowds are agitated,” said Sartaj Malik Nizamuddin,a protestor in his late twenties.

Meanwhile, there has been a call to shut markets in Old Delhi and Nizamuddin on Friday.

The police have received information about plans of Friday prayers, said DCP O P Mishra. He added that the police are prepared to keep the law and order situation under control.
