Four phones seized from Tihar in ’10,say officials

This year’s figures are higher compared to that of the last two years. While four mobile phones and five SIM cards have been seized in the first five months of this year,five phones and four SIM cards were recovered over the last year.

A total of two SIM cards were recovered in 2008,officials added.

Several measures like installation of mobile phone jammers,routine prison checking and monitoring of footage from CCTV cameras for mobile phone usage have been undertaken by authorities to check the use of cellphones on the jail premises.

The recovery of phones at the Tihar Jail complex is low when compared to that of other prison complexes,officials claimed.

“In Jaipur jail,over 355 mobile phones and 112 SIM cards were seized during raids in the past one year. Last month,a mobile phone was seized from Nalini Sriharan,who was convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case and is serving a life sentence in the Special Prison for Women in Vellore,Tamil Nadu,” an official said.

In most cases,undertrials and petty criminals were the ones trying to sneak in mobile phones in Tihar,an official said.
