For now,you cannot have fancy number plates

No fancy number plates have been issued to the public since 2012,according to the department,which is ready with the e-auctioning system for such number plates.

“The proposal to begin the e-auctioning process was sent to the L-G some time back and we were told not to begin the process till the elections are over,” an official said. The department was earlier hoping to have the system in place by September-end.

“But whether the process of auction starts after the polls will also depend on the next elected government’s interest in implementing the project. There are many series of numbers lying with us as we have only issued a few to MLAs,MPs,Union and Delhi government officials,” an official said.

As part of the project,premium numbers will be auctioned at a base price,ranging from

Rs 20,000 to Rs 5 lakh. Sources said the auctioning software had been designed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and had been tested extensively.

Under the auctioning policy,the fancy number plates will be divided into five categories with a base price for each category.

The Transport department will announce the registration numbers,which will be put up for sale at the start of each fortnight.

Each person bidding will have to deposit a reserve price to participate in the bidding. The person will then be given a password to participate in the bidding of the number,which will be sent through e-mail or mobile.
