Five members of a family have been convicted by a city court for killing a young couple to death in 2010 in a case of honour killing.
The court of Additional Sessions Judge Ramesh Kumar convicted the parents, uncle, aunt and brother of 19-year-old girl Asha for beating, and then electrocuting her and her 20-year-old boyfriend Yogesh to death. The family reportedly did not want the two to marry because the boy was from a lower Jatav caste.
Yogesh,a taxi driver, wanted to marry Asha, the daughter of vegetable vendor Suraj, who lived in Gokulpuri,Northeast Delhi. In June 2010,Ashas mother found out about their affair and reportedly assaulted Asha, while her father Suraj told Yogesh to stay away from his daughter.
The bodies were found in the home of Ashas paternal uncle Om Prakash. Autopsy reports later revealed that the young couple had been tied with ropes and beaten with metal pipes.
Medical examination had revealed that the two had died due to the thermoelectric shock from repeated electrocution. Both bodies had burn marks on their arms and legs, where the electric wires had been wrapped. The girl also had severe injury marks on her head.
Additional Public Prosecutor PK Verma told the court that the case was of a brutal and deliberate honour killing, and the five family members had committed a double murder after torturing the couple. The prosecution asked the court to sentence them to death. The court will pronounce its sentence on October 5.
