After the health of 10 students, who had been on a fast for the past ten days, deteriorated on Saturday, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) called off the hunger strike. The JNUSU were on the strike demanding a hike in the merit-cum-means (MCM) scholarship.
The union has decided to march to the Parliament on Monday after the administration refused to accept their demand.
The JNUSU also accused the Congress-backed NSUI of sabotaging the interest of poor students. What demarcates this agitation from other JNUSU agitations is the direct intervention by the ruling party at the Centre, the Congress through the NSUI,in trying to sabotage the students struggle. During the 10-day strike,it became amply clear to the JNUSU that the administration was prevented from enhancing the MCM beyond Rs 2,000 by the Central government under the pretext of paucity of funds, a JNUSU statement said.
In August, the university administration increased the MCM scholarship by Rs 500 taking the scholarship amount to Rs 2,000. But students have been demanding that it be increased to Rs 3,000. JNU spokesperson Poonam Kudaisiya said even the Rs 500 hike has put an additional burden of Rs 1.5 crore on the university.
Nearly 1,400 students of the university belonging to economically weaker sections avail the scholarship.
