Eye on polls? Delhi’s AAP government adds over Rs 1,700 crore to public-centric schemes
In terms of revenue, the Delhi government’s estimates of resources recorded higher income in all but one of five heads — excise which was deficient by over Rs 1,300 crore.

From additional schooling facilities and the maintenance of roads to rejuvenating the Yamuna and providing potable water to unauthorised colonies – the AAP Delhi government has made additional allocations of over Rs 1,700 crore for visible, citizen-centric schemes for the remainder of the current financial year.
While a slew of such projects constitutes the lion’s share of additional allocations in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, the government also overshot its target of tax revenue under four out of five heads – barring excise.
According to government data, revised estimates for the creation of additional schooling facilities in the capital have recorded an uptick of more than Rs 471 crore, pushing total expenditure for it over Rs 6,000 crore from around Rs 5,500 crore in the initial Budget Estimates.

Maintenance, repair and strengthening of Delhi’s roads under the Public Works Department has received an additional allocation of Rs 231 crore and an extra Rs 70 crore has been pledged for Yamuna rejuvenation.
More than Rs 236 crore has been earmarked for the supply of potable water to unauthorised colonies, Rs 50 crore more for the improvement of their sewer infrastructure and upwards of Rs 179 crore for the improvement of existing waterworks.

The remaining four, which are part of its tax revenue, registered an increase over estimated income. The estimated revenue from state excise had been pegged at Rs 7,365 crore of which only Rs 6,000 crore was generated.

As opposed to the estimated revenue of Rs 31,500 crore, Rs 32,200 was generated from the GST, Rs 6,600 against Rs 5,700 crore from VAT, Rs 7,100 crore instead of Rs 6,000 crore from stamp and registration fee including land revenue and Rs 3,300 crore opposed to the estimated Rs 3,000 crore from taxes on vehicles.
