Three persons have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police in connection with an extortion bid on a Chhawla resident, who had recently made several crores by selling his land. Police said the extortion calls were made from Narnaul jail in Haryana by one Jyoti Sangwan, who is currently lodged there.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ashok Chand said on July 7, a landowner from Khera village in Chhawla filed a police complaint that he was getting extortion calls from Sangwan and his brother Kapil. The complainant also told police that several men had fired at his house and demanded Rs 30 lakh in cash. “The complainant did not pay the extortion money and left the village. Then the accused began threatening a close associate of the complainant, who is also a resident of Chhawla. They even tried to kidnap the associate. Then the landowner filed a case,” Chand said.
He said on Thursday, the Crime Branch received information about three associates of the Sangwan brothers who too were part of the extortion racket. The three men, Vasudev (18), Krishna Kumar (24) and Prashant Gulia (21), were arrested from Suraj cinema near Najafgarh.
During questioning, the three admitted that they knew the complainant and also the fact that he had come into some money by selling his land. They allegedly told police that it was on the instructions of the Sangwan brothers that they fired at the complainant’s house in a bid to frighten him. To frighten him further, Jyoti Sangwan called him from jail. Investigation has revealed that Sangwan made at least four calls to the complainant.
When the complainant fled the village, the three attempted to kidnap his associate but their bid was foiled by villagers.
Police said Vasudev is a second-year polytechnic student at Bahadurgarh in Haryana, while Krishna Kumar is a MBA student. Gulia is currently unemployed.
