Two men were shot dead in Northeast Delhi’s Pratap Nagar on Friday evening after unidentified assailants opened fire at them in a residential lane, police said.

According to officers, a call was received at Harsh Vihar police station at 7.15 pm about a firing incident in C-Block of Pratap Nagar. When police reached the spot, they learnt that the victims — Sudhir Kumar (35) and his friend Radhey Prajapati (30) — had been rushed to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital by their families. Doctors declared both dead during treatment, said police.

Ajay Kumar, Sudhir’s brother, said they were all sitting in his mobile phone shop when the incident occurred.

“My brother and his friend were sitting here… my mother was lying on the diwan, my younger brother was here too. The assailants suddenly came and shot at the two men. One fell inside my shop and the other outside, in the parking area. After shooting them once, the assailants shot at the two again,” Kumar told reporters present at the scene.

Sudhir’s mother told reporters that her son and his friend allegedly had an altercation with three men around a week ago, resulting in the trio being held in custody for a while. The woman suspected that the three men, out for revenge, were behind the attack.

“They came in two cars… three men got out and hurled abuses… Before I knew what had happened, there was a loud noise… I ran out and saw my son lying inside the shop,” she said.

Senior police officers said dedicated teams are working to track the assailants. “Clues are being developed, and technical surveillance has been mounted. We are confident of apprehending those involved soon,” an officer said.
