The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) initiated an inquiry into possible negligence after a 10-year-old boy,Nand Kishore,died after falling into an unmanned manhole at a pumping station in Dwarka on Tuesday morning.

Locals claimed the water could not be drained out with a generator since there was no electricity in the area in the morning.

The police have registered a case of negligence and are probing the mishap.

According to the police,Nand Kishore had gone to the sewage pumping station in Dwarka’s Sector-7 with friend Rahul,11,on Tuesday morning. Rahul’s uncle Sanju works in the pumping station and Kishore reportedly went with his friend to see Sanju at work on the sewage tank since their school was closed today.

The fire service received an alert at 10.30 am about a boy having fallen in the sewage tank but Kishore had died by the time the firemen reached the spot,the police said.

The body could be taken out only after three hours.

“Rahul ran to his uncle after Nand Kishore fell in the manhole but the boy had drowned before they arrived,” Sub-Inspector Vidhya Dhar of Palam police said.

Palam police have registered a case under IPC Section 304-A (death due to negligence).

DJB chief executive officer Ramesh Negi said,“The manhole belongs to one of our private contractors and there might be negligence on their part. We have ordered a high-level inquiry and also registered a case with the police.”

The boy’s father,Choubey Singh,drives an auto-rickshaw for a living.
