Delhi has only government liquor shops operated and managed by four corporations — DTIDC, DCCWS, DSIIDC and DSCSC (Representative image)Delhi saw a 13% surge in excise revenue collection between April and December 2024, in comparison to the same period during the previous year, official data shows.
The Excise Department collected revenue to the tune of Rs 4,233 crore through excise duty between April and December last year, as per the government data. In 2023-24, the department collected revenue to the tune of Rs 3,718 crore in the same period.
The revenue collection increased after VAT (Value Added Tax) collection. Last year, between April to December, the Excise Department collected revenue of Rs 6,061 crore, including VAT. In 2023, during the same period, this figure stood at Rs 5,361 crore, said officials.
The data also shows that the revenue collection this year was also higher ahead of festival season and year-end, especially during October, November, and December. Last year, excise revenue of Rs 705.8 crore was collected in October, Rs 760 crore in November and Rs 760 crore in December. In 2023, in October, the department collected Rs 705.24 crore, Rs 604 crore in November and Rs 620 crore in December.
However, data shows that liquor sales on New Year’s Eve were higher in 2023 in comparison to the last year.
Data shows that a total of 24 lakh bottles were sold on December 31, 2023. While, on December 31, 2024, 23 lakh bottles were sold. “The sales were slightly down last year in comparison to the previous year because this time 31st fell on Tuesday and many people do not drink on Tuesday,” said an official.
