Delhi student sent hoax bomb email to school to get day off, avoid facing classmates: Police

A 14-year-old student has been apprehended by the Delhi Police for allegedly emailing a hoax bomb threat to his school in South Delhi so he could get the day off.

The suspect admitted to sending the threat in hopes of staying away from school to avoid his classmates with whom he had had a spat, said police.

Police said the student told them he was aware of recent hoax email incidents in schools across Delhi-NCR that resulted in school closures and hoped to cause a similar disruption.

“The suspect had gotten into a petty dispute with his classmates which led him to send the email to the school… the dispute occurred due to classroom dynamics and did not involve any violence,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan.

Police said the mobile phone allegedly used to send the email to the school from an unknown email ID Friday was also seized within hours.

The threat, sent around 12.30 am, led to the immediate evacuation of the school premises on Friday morning.

The bomb detection team and a dog squad thoroughly checked the premises, but nothing suspicious was found, said police. Subsequently, a case was registered under BNS section 351(3) (criminal intimidation) and section 66(F) (cyber terrorism) of the IT Act.

A team from Cyber Police Station (South District) was formed to tackle the case. The team collected and analysed the sender’s email address and IP address which led to the suspect’s location.

Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the email was sent by a student of the same school. The team raided the identified location and apprehended the juvenile Friday evening.
