The 55-km-long Ring Road (File)To ensure effective and timely monitoring as well as upkeep of the Ring Road, the Public Works Department (PWD) has divided the entire stretch into eight sections and deployed one controlling officer as in-charge for each section.
A senior PWD official said this was done keeping in mind the upcoming Sewa Pakhwada initiative – a series of events to be organised by the Delhi government to celebrate the 75th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 17.
“As Home Minister Amit Shah and senior leaders of BJP will be attending these events, PWD teams have been asked to complete assigned works on time and be prepared for these programmes,” said a senior official.
In a circular dated September 12 – issued by Special Secretary (PWD) Ruchika Katyal – the department said, “…daily inspections (of the Ring Road) be made till and during the Sewa Pakhwada to ensure that said works are completed and thereafter… continued for maintenance.”
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had announced that the government will launch 75 development and welfare programmes during the Sewa Pakhwada — from September 17 to October 2. On September 17, Gupta is likely to conduct a cleanliness drive on some portions of the Ring Road, said officials.
The circular stated, “For each section, one controlling officer is hereby designated as in-charge for supervision and overall responsibility of road maintenance, including carriageway, footpaths, central verge, and pavements… Drainage maintenance… (included upkeep of) roadside drains, culverts, and related structures.”
The designated teams will also carry out horticulture work alongside the road, including plantation, landscaping, and upkeep of green areas, it added. Besides, these teams will monitor all associated works on this stretch related to safety, signage, lighting coordination, and cleanliness.
“The designated in-charges, along with superintendent engineers, who will be in charge of the concerned circle, and assistant engineer in charge of the respective location, will be responsible for periodic inspection of the respective sections…,” the circular said.
Further, the engineers will have to coordinate with other departments and municipal bodies for prompt rectification of defects and damages on the Ring Road and submit a fortnightly report on the condition and works executed in their section to the additional chief secretary (PWD).
The Ring Road is a 55-km long road starting from Shalimar Bagh in North Delhi to Azadpur. Also called as Mahatma Gandhi Marg, it connects North Delhi to Central, South, West and Northwest Delhi, including areas like ITO, Kashmere Gate, IP Extension, Azadpur, Ashram, Lajpat Nagar, Moolchand, AIIMS, and Bhikaji Cama Place, among others.
