This is the third inquiry into the alleged encounter killing. Earlier, a magisterial inquiry was ordered by the Delhi government, apart from a special investigating team formed on the orders of the Centre.
Vashisht’s family also met Bassi on Tuesday morning. Vashishth’s brother Anil said, “We told the commissioner that policemen claiming to be from the Special Cell had been tracking Manoj’s car from Dhaula Kuan to Noida Pari Chowk on April 29 after which they threatened Manoj saying that the Special Cell was investigating a couple of cases against him and would be arresting him any time. My brother paid the policemen Rs 60,000 and he was let off with a warning. We told the commissioner that we feared that the probe will be influenced and requested for an impartial probe.”
Soon after this meeting, Bassi met senior police officers and it was decided that the Special Cell personnel will be transferred in order to ensure a fair probe. Reacting to the allegation of corruption, the vigilance branch of the Delhi Police initiated an inquiry into the case.
Rajan Bhagat, Delhi Police PRO, said, “The Commissioner of Police has assured that the probe will not be influenced. Delhi Police will transfer all officers involved in encounter. A vigilance probe has been ordered to probe whether an extortion racket was being run. The SIT has also been told to expedite its probe.”
By Tuesday evening, nine policemen — Inspector Dharmender Kumar to IGI Airport; Sub-Inspector Vivek Singh to PCR; Sub-Inspector Bhoop Singh to the First Battalion; Head Constable Sanjay Pal Singh to the Third Battalion; Head Constable Anil Rao to Police Training School in Wazirabad; Constable Jitendra Kumar to Seventh Battalion; Constable Abdul Ahed Khan to Police Training School in Jharoda Kalan; Constable Mohit Salve to Security; and Constable Munshi Solanki to Provisions and Logistics — were transferred.
A senior officer at the Special Cell said, “The policemen have been transferred to ensure a fair probe. The Special Cell had been tracking Vashishth for the last 20 days after an informer gave us an input about Vashisht’s whereabouts. He was a proclaimed offender. Though there was no case against Vashishth registered with the Special Cell, the Special Cell is mandated to nab all who have been repeatedly evading arrest.”
