Delhi blast LIVE updates: BJP hits out at Congress over Chidambaram's 'two kinds of terrorists' remark

BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli has hit back at the Congress saying: "Terrorists are terrorists. It doesn't matter what kind of classification the Congress party or its leadership would like to give it. Ultimately, it doesn't matter which socio-economic background they come from. The only thing that matters is that terrorists take innocent lives without seeing who are Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Parsis, Jews... In the fight against terror, there are only two sides. Those who stand with the terrorists or those who stand against it. Mr Chidambaram and his party would do well to try to explain to the victims of the Delhi bomb blast, on whose side they are standing, when they come up with such an apologist kind of a narrative, or trying to paint some kind of victimhood."

Chidambaram had earlier said: "I have maintained before and after the Pahalgam terror attack that there are two kinds of terrorists -- foreign-trained infiltrated terrorists and home-grown terrorists."

Delhi News LIVE Updates: What is the Nithari killing case?

Behind bars for nearly two decades after his arrest in the Nithari serial killings case, Surendra Koli spent his days in prison quietly — sweeping or mopping his cell repeatedly and keeping to himself, rarely interacting with other inmates.

As the Supreme Court on Tuesday set aside his conviction in a case of rape and murder of a teenage girl — one of the many cases that arose out of the Nithari murders — he is now free to walk out of prison. This was the last pending case against him; he had been acquitted in 12 other cases by the Allahabad HC on October 16, 2023.

“… He keeps to himself… doesn’t talk much to others… hardly anyone came to visit him,” said an official of Kasna jail, where Koli has been lodged for close to 14 years.

“He keeps cleaning the cell to pass time I think. He does this repeatedly. I often spot him with a broom in his hand, cleaning the floor, without paying attention to his surroundings,” said another jail official.... Continue reading

Delhi News LIVE Updates: Why Supreme Court decided to acquit him

Observing that “suspicion, however grave, cannot replace proof beyond reasonable doubt” and “courts cannot prefer expediency over legality,” the Supreme Court Tuesday set aside the conviction of Surendra Koli in a case of rape and murder of a teenage girl, one of the many cases that arose out of the Nithari serial killings two decades ago, and ordered his “forthwith” release.

The bench of Chief Justice of India B R Gavai and Justices Surya Kant and Vikram Nath reversed Koli’s conviction while allowing his curative petition, and directed that he be released if not wanted in any other case.

The bench noted that Koli had already been acquitted in 12 of the 13 cases against him and wondered how the same set of evidence that did not hold good in the 12 cases could be relied upon for conviction in just one.

“There was no credible chain of custody or expert testimony establishing that a domestic help with no medical training could perform the precise dismemberment described. These gaps were central to the acquittals in the twelve cases. They are equally present here,” the bench said. Read Here
