The Delhi Police constable arrested while trying to rob a truck driver is under a debt burden running into lakhs of rupees and pressure from moneylenders, sources said Wednesday.
Rajesh, currently with Delhi Police 3rd Battalion, was arrested Tuesday during the robbery bid in North Delhi’s Timarpur area. He is in police custody for three days. Sources said during questioning, Rajesh, who hails from Haryana’s Bhiwani district, said moneylenders were pressuring him to return their money.

This is not the first time Rajesh, who joined the force in 2010, has landed in trouble. Earlier, however, his trouble stemmed from departmental action.
Rajesh, earlier posted at Nand Nagri police station, was sent to a district line along with 60 of his colleagues and the SHO, for ‘allowing’ gambling in their area in 2014, said a source.
This shifting of a police station’s entire staff to district line is among the largest collective ‘punishment posting’ in the history of Delhi Police.
During his stint in Nand Nagri he came in contact with Rahul, who had a criminal record, said sources. “Rahul was with him last night. Rajesh had hatched the plan with him to rob truckers to repay his debt,” added the officer.
