The Delhi Police arrested a 36-year-old man who is allegedly an active member of the interstate Tala Chabi Sikligar Gang on February 29. Manjeet Singh, from a village near Udaipur, was apprehended for his involvement in a house theft case where he and his associates pretended to be keymakers to access people’s houses.

The Sikligar Gang, operating primarily from Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, and Udaipur and Banswara in Rajasthan, would infiltrate residential colonies in Delhi, posing as key makers during the daytime. Their targets ranged from unattended houses to those with locked doors. After committing the crimes, they would flee the city, making it challenging for authorities to track them down.

The police were informed of their racket when a Mandir Marg resident, Pankaj Kumar, called a locksmith from the street to repair his almirah’s lock. The locksmith told Kumar the cupboard’s handle needed to be repaired and that he would come back the following day. The next day the locksmith and his associate reached the house in the afternoon and on the pretext of checking the key, unlocked another cupboard and stole gold jewellery and cash worth Rs. 20,000-25,000.

The police pieced together evidence from CCTV footage and witness statements. Their investigation led them to a hotel in Paharganj, where suspicious individuals had recently checked in and subsequently fled after the incident.

Through a combination of CCTV analysis, local intelligence, and raids, Singh was ultimately apprehended from his hideout in the Pratap Nagar area of Udaipur. After recovering the stolen articles, Singh was arrested under sections 380/34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for theft. Additionally, Singh disclosed his affiliation with the “Sikligar Gang” and informed about his accomplice, Gurmukh Singh, a resident of Banswara, Rajasthan.

Despite efforts to apprehend Gurmukh Singh, he remains at large, prompting authorities to initiate proceedings to declare him a proclaimed offender. The police also looked into Singh’s criminal history, which involved previous cases in Delhi, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
