The Delhi Police have intensified its efforts to identify and deport illegal migrants residing in the capital, with the recent detention and arrest of three more Bangladeshi nationals.

Surendra Choudhary, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Southwest Delhi, said on Tuesday that a mother and son from Bangladesh, who had been living in Delhi for nearly two decades, were apprehended on Sunday as part of a targeted verification drive aimed at addressing concerns over unauthorised migration.

“On December 29, a special team led by Inspector Ravindra Kumar Verma (SHO South Campus) received a tip-off about a Bangladeshi national in the Shastri Market area near Pippal Chowk. Acting swiftly on the information, the team intercepted a suspect, identified as Naim Khan, 22, hailing from the Khulna region of Bangladesh. Upon interrogation, Khan admitted to entering India illegally via the West Bengal border in 2020 and residing at Katwaria Sarai in Delhi with his mother Nazma Khan,” DCP Choudhary said.

“Further investigation revealed that Nazma had entered India approximately 20 years ago through the Benapole border and had been working as a domestic helper,” Choudhary added.

DCP Choudhary said both Naim and Nazma were detained, and after following the necessary legal procedures, they were deported back to Bangladesh through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).

Meanwhile, in a separate operation, the police also detained another Bangladeshi national, Mohammad Akhtar Seikh, following a routine address verification.

“He was arrested earlier on November 28 by the Sarojini Nagar police in connection with a drug case. After being produced before the court, he was released on bail,” DCP Choudhary said.

However, on December 30, during a routine address verification, police discovered that Seikh had fled his previous residence and was now hiding at different locations. “Upon conducting a secret inquiry, he was found to be a Bangladeshi national despite initially claiming to be from West Bengal. He was traced to the Sarojini Nagar Railway Station, where he was again arrested,” the officer said.

During interrogation, Seikh revealed that he was born in Madarganj in Kochaghata in Bangladesh and entered India illegally in 2004 via the land border with West Bengal, said the police.

“He also disclosed that before moving to Delhi for work, he was living in West Bengal, where he married a Hindu woman in 2012,” DCP Choudhary said, adding that Seikh had been working in Delhi as a labourer at a construction site.

“He was unable to produce any valid Indian identification documents. Accordingly, a fresh case was filed under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, and he was arrested once again on Monday,” said the DCP.
