Delhi News Live Updates: When Umar Khalid came home

It was Umar Khalid’s second visit home since he was jailed four years ago in the “larger conspiracy” case related to the 2020 Delhi riots. And it was a visit that left the 37-year-old former JNU student leader’s family in that twilight zone between worry and hope.

“He seemed a bit weak this time. All of us noticed that,” Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas told The Indian Express at their home in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar, hours after his son’s seven-day interim bail to attend a relative’s wedding ended on January 3. “There was some weight loss…There was also the anxiety and excitement of interim bail,” said Banojyotsna Lahiri, a Delhi-based researcher and Khalid’s close friend, speaking to this newspaper over the phone.

But then, both are hopeful, too.

From someone who was anxious and disturbed two years ago, Ilyas said he saw a changed man in Khalid this time. “This time, he’s optimistic that he will get bail soon. He thinks the fake charges against him can’t go on forever,” the father said with a smile while sipping tea. “We know this will be over soon. We all are optimistic,” said Banojyotsna. She added that despite the weight loss, “he is doing fine”.

‘Anti-women’: BJP Kalkaji candidate Bidhuri attacks Atishi over surname, AAP calls party 'anti-women'

BJP's Kalkaji candidate Ramesh Bidhuri on Sunday courted yet another controversy, targetting this time Delhi Chief minister Atishi over her surname.

Speaking at BJP's 'Parivartan Rally' in Rohini that was later addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bidhuri said Atishi changed her surname from "Marlena" to "Singh".

Atishi, who is the sitting MLA from the Kalkaji seat, dropped her surname a while back.

"This Marlena (surname used earlier by Atishi) became Singh, changed name. Kejriwal swore over his children not to go with the corrupt Congress, and Marlena changed father. Earlier she was Marlena, now she has become Singh. This is their character," Bidhuri charged.

As the video of Bidhuri's speech showed up on the internet, AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal lashed at the BJP saying its leaders crossed all the limits of "shamelessness." "BJP leaders are hurling abuses at Delhi chief minister Atishi ji. Delhi people will not tolerate the insult of a woman chief minister. All the women in Delhi will take revenge for this," he said in a post.

Just a day after BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri was declared the party’s contender against Chief Minister Atishi and Congress leader Alka Lamba in Kalkaji in the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls, setting the stage for a high-profile electoral contest, a remark by him at a public rally sparked controversy on Sunday. As the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and the Congress labelled Bidhuri’s remark on Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra “anti-women”, the former South Delhi MP first defended the comment and then apologised on social media.

At Sunday’s rally, Bidhuri was talking about the condition of roads in Kalkaji when Ramesh Bidhuri said, “Lalu (Prasad Yadav) ne kaha tha Bihar main ki Bihar ki sadkon ko main Hema Malini ji ke gaalon jaisi bana dunga. Lalu ne jhoot bola tha. Nahi bana paaya. Lekin main aapko vishwas dilata hoon, kaise Okhla ki sadkein humne bana di hain, Sangam Vihar ki bana di hain, isi tarah, Kalkaji… ki saari ki saari sadkein, Priyanka Gandhi ke gaal jaisi zaroor bana denge. (Lalu said that in Bihar, he would make the roads as smooth as Hema Malini’s cheeks. Lalu lied; he couldn’t do it. But I assure you, just like we improved the roads in Okhla and Sangam Vihar, we will definitely make all the roads in Kalkaji as smooth as Priyanka Gandhi’s cheeks).”
