CM Rekha Gupta repackaged AAP's electric Mohalla Buses project to take undue credit, says Saurabh Bharadwaj

The Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday accused the BJP government of repackaging the Atishi-led dispensation's electric 'Mohalla Buses' project, inaugurated last October, as Delhi Electric Vehicle Initiative (DEVI) to take "undue credit".

A day after Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated 400 new electric buses under the DEVI project to provide connectivity to areas inaccessible by standard 12-metre buses, AAP's Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj termed it a "blatant attempt to mislead the public".

"The BJP is re-inaugurating the same Mohalla buses that were flagged off by the AAP government last year. This is a blatant attempt to mislead the public and take credit for a scheme that was already operational," he claimed.

He said the electric 'Mohalla Buses' project was launched in October 2024 with a contract awarded to the Central government entity CESL to maintain transparency and prevent any corruption allegations.

"If the buses were non-compliant in October, how did they suddenly become compliant in April 2025? Or did the BJP government simply ignore the tender rules and put the buses on the roads for the sake of optics?" he asked.

Bharadwaj demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter, calling it a potential scam involving thousands of crores. (PTI)

Delhi-NCR Rains: Activist blames concretisation around trees for uprooting during storm

Green activist Bhavreen Kandhari blamed years of negligence for the ecocide.

"One of the primary causes is the rampant concretisation around tree bases, which restricts vital feeder root growth and weakens anchorage. Construction-related soil compaction, repeated digging, and aging root systems worsen the problem," she said.

Kandhari also highlighted that a 2013 order by the National Green Tribunal had directed all authorities to remove concrete from one metre radius around trees — a directive that remains poorly enforced.

"Unless the government integrates tree health into its urban planning and enforces existing regulations, these incidents will only rise," she warned. PTI

Delhi-NCR Rains: What caused Friday downpour in Delhi-NCR?

According to data from the IMD, Safdarjung, Delhi's main weather station, recorded 77 mm of rain in just six hours, between 2.30 am and 8.30 am.

Other areas also saw significant rainfall, with Lodhi Road receiving 78 mm, Pragati Maidan and Pitampura 71.5 mm each, Ridge 59.2 mm, Pusa 50 mm, Palam 45.6 mm, Najafgarh 40 mm, Ayanagar 39.4 mm, and Jaffarpur 67.5 mm.

An upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and another over northeast Rajasthan and adjoining northwest Madhya Pradesh contributed to the precipitation.

The rain was accompanied by southeasterly winds reaching up to 50 kmph.

"Moisture and wind convergence over the region -- fed by both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal -- along with persistently favourable synoptic conditions in the lower and middle tropospheric levels, triggered the heavy rain," the IMD said in a statement.
