The air quality in Delhi and NCR cities further deteriorated on Thursday morning, with the air quality index of Delhi touching 600 at around 5.30 am today. The air quality in Delhi NCR pushed past the ‘severe’ category in several areas in the early hours of Thursday, according to AQI.in.
While Delhi recorded an AQI of 601 today, adjoining cities of Noida and Gurgaon both had an AQI of over 500, falling in the ‘severe’ category. Noida recorded an AQI of 503 at 7 am, while Gurgaon had an AQI of 515 at the same time, as per aqi.in.
Over a dozen monitoring stations recorded Delhi’s air quality as hazardous today, with aqi.in terming it as bad as smoking over 8 cigarettes a day. Among the most polluted zones in Delhi were Burari, Anand Vihar, Aerocity and Bawana.
The AQI scale classifies air quality as: Good (0–50), Satisfactory (51–100), Moderately Polluted (101–200), Poor (201–300), Very Poor (301–400), and Severe (401–500). Higher AQI readings indicate increasingly unhealthy air.
Experts have recommended not stepping out for prolonged periods of time, and always using a mask in open spaces across Delhi, as the sudden rise in the air quality my trigger health risks.
With a drop in temperature and the season of stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana, the air quality index in Delhi and NCR cities usually reaches hazardous levels during November and December due to reduced wind speeds.
