The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has unveiled its initiative to educate passengers about their contribution to reducing carbon emissions by choosing metros over motor vehicles.

Each ticket will note how much the ride has contributed to reducing carbon emissions by using the passenger’s travel distance to calculate the statistic.

The Delhi Metro is probably the world’s first metro service to introduce such a feature, officials said. The initiative was supported by research conducted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Delhi. TERI conducted an evaluation of the carbon dioxide emissions for each kilometre travelled by passengers using the Delhi Metro, along with five different motorised options for road travel: buses, private cars, taxis, auto-rickshaws (three-wheelers), and two-wheelers.

Additionally, TERI calculated the combined carbon dioxide emission average for road-based transportation systems, taking into account the distribution of these modes of transportation within Delhi. The research showcased how each kilometre travelled by metro contributes to a reduction of 32.38 grams of carbon dioxide emissions.

According to DMRC officials, the authority undertook such a step to raise awareness about individual choices to reduce one’s carbon footprint. It also helps in nudging a shift in commuter behaviour to make more responsible transportation choices, officials said. The passengers’ CO2 savings will be accumulated and displayed on their DMRC app, thus giving commuters tangible evidence of their contribution, officials added.

The DMRC has, in the past, attempted to shift to greener energy sources., said officials, adding that it has achieved a solar power generation capacity of 50 MwP. In June this year, the metro introduced a mobile application-based QR code ticketing option which has garnered over 4.7 lakh downloads in the last two months.

“This stands as a resounding call to action, urging citizens to make informed choices for sustainable public transportation and embrace the Delhi Metro as a means to actively combat climate change,” said the DMRC principal executive director Anuj Dayal.
