A 27-year-old man was arrested within hours of allegedly stabbing a 29-year-old e-rickshaw driver to death following a quarrel in Dwarka’s Mohan Garden area, police said on Saturday.
According to the police, on the intervening night of October 4 and 5, a medico-legal case (MLC) was received at Mohan Garden police station from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, stating that one Mohit had been admitted with stab injuries sustained during a quarrel.
During the inquiry, police learnt that the injured had been shifted to a higher medical centre.
Around the same time, another caller, Sunil, a local e-rickshaw driver, informed the police that a man identified as Tejraj Nepali had allegedly threatened him with a knife near Grover Sweets on Polo Garden Road.
“When Mohit intervened and asked him not to threaten the complainant, Tejraj began beating him and then stabbed him in the stomach,” said DCP, Dwarka, Ankita Singh.
Later that night, a message was received from Safdarjung Hospital stating that Mohit had succumbed to his injuries during treatment. A case under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at Mohan Garden police station.
Police said a team carried out multiple raids based on technical surveillance and local intelligence. “After extensive efforts, the accused, Tejraj Joshi alias Nepali, was apprehended from the area. He admitted to having attacked Mohit during a heated argument,” said DCP Singh.
Tejraj, a resident of Bhagwati Garden Extension, who hails from Dodel Dhora district in Nepal, was later arrested. Police recovered the knife used in the murder and the clothes he was wearing at the time of the crime.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain the sequence of events and whether the accused was under the influence of alcohol or had any previous criminal record, officers said.
